Nine out of ten people carry their mobile phone with them every moment of the day – using it anytime and anywhere. The full computing capacity (CPU processing power and speed, in-built memory, data storage, etc) of today's top end smartphones is equivalent to the computing power of a laptop five years ago making it a perfect platform for advanced content and applications.
It is therefore of no surprise that the mobile application revenues are expected to boom and grow in the double-digits into 2012 according to reports by Compass Intelligence. Mobile application revenues from for example US businesses are expected to reach just over $11.6 billion by 2012.
Analysts at Compass Intelligence predict that factors leading to the explosive growth in mobile applications include the move towards open wireless platforms, applications, and networks, as well as competing smartphones such as the iPhone.
But the diversity of handsets, platforms and the difference of operators around the world already present a stumbling block to companies bringing content and applications to the public, creating a need for a myriad of versions to be built and tested.
