Rob Bamforth is a Principal Analyst with Quocirca Ltd, a leader in Business and IT analysis in Europe. His experience is a blend of sales, marketing and an understanding of technology, which gives him an approach that focuses first on business, with technology as the supporting service, not the driving need. His technical foundation comes from the development and management of software projects encompassing technical, commercial and mission critical systems, at specialised software houses, and his sales and marketing experience from positioning and promoting emerging network services technology. In the early 1990s at Sun, he spearheaded the marketing of the Internet and Java, developing market opportunities and promoting both from technologies into mainstream business. Rob's understanding of the needs for representing commercial realities gave him the foundation to build Sun's Executive Briefing Centre programme to position novel concepts in a business context. Rob subsequently worked as an industry analyst with Bloor Research, developing the wireless and mobile practice, prior to joining Quocirca. He has published a number of reports covering many aspects of service provision and the challenges of enterprise mobility, and he is a regular contributor of analytical content to The Register and silicon.com. So far the combined marketing efforts of vendors have made Unified Communications look slick on paper and even indicative of a paradigm shift in enterprise communications. However on the buyer side some confusion remains about what exactly is on offer beyond IP telephony...and there is a strong feeling that suppliers are unable to demonstrate the benefits unified communications will bring to their businesses.
This debate is the chance for businesses to get clarity from the vendor community of how Unified Communications can translate into the real benefits that most customers are actually looking for…and an opportunity for evangelists within the vendor community to respond to the challenge from businesses that Unified Communications is simply a marketing term designed to repackage old promises.
